November 30 th Press Briefing
The Press Secretariat within the Prime Minister’s Office held its regular press briefing on the afternoon of November 30t” 2018.
The first key area covered in the press briefing included the formation of the press
correspondents group, comprising of up to 50 representatives of national and international
media entities primarily working on news. The Press Secretary noted that a set of objective
selection criteria were formulated to identify which entities would have physical access to
the press briefings, also stated that the list will be updated regularly and highlighted the
Press Secretariat’s continued commitment to ensuree all get accurate and timely information through various channels.
Discussing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s meeting with competing political parties, the Press Secretary on this second issue emphasized the importance of this milestone in changing the narrative of the country’s political culture. As the first of its kind, the meeting was attended by a large number of locally registered parties and those that have been in exile, and aimed at forging a common understanding on issues related to electoral reform.
Thirdly, the Press Secretary discussed the remarkable steps currently underway in
strengthening rule of law in the country through a focus on institution building and
strengthening as evidenced by the independent actions taken by the Attorney General and
related organs.
Lastly, the Press Secretary drew attention to the increasing influence of Ethiopia at both the continental and international levels, rooted in its dynamic reforms and in promoting peace and economic integration in the Horn region. The deep reforms undertaken over the past few months and the ongoing initiatives have attracted unprecedented support from all corners and are positively reshaping Ethiopia’s global standing.
